PROJECTS

Bacon Family Wheelchair Ramp

Our primary motivation behind most of our fundraising is the need to finance our biggest single Community Service Project, Wheelchair Ramps. We are constantly on the lookout for used aluminum wheelchair ramps that folks are willing to donate or that we can get for a nominal purchase price. We’ve purchased a few ramps (and driven as far as Atlanta, GA, Blackburg, SC, and Lee, FL to collect them) but most of our ramps are donated by families whose loved one is gone and the family no longer needs them. There’s never a charge to the recipient for one of our ramps; we only ask that when it’s no longer needed they contact us so that we can repurpose it for someone else. We currently have 35 wheelchair ramps out in a three-county area and we’ve recovered and repurposed 21 wheelchair ramps. We give priority to Veterans but we will put a ramp up for anyone in need so long as we have
the materials.

Flags

Among other projects that keep us busy, we have a 155-flag Holiday Flag Display which we put up around our Veteran’s Park and Courthouse on Patriot Holidays it also includes a large (11 by 19 Ft) flag that we hoist up to the second floor of the Courthouse for Memorial Day and Christmas.

We have a Color Guard and Honor Guard for Veteran’s Day Programs, Memorial Day Programs, and Parade Participation. We have our Business Flag Sponsorship Program wherein we provide a flag in front of the sponsoring business which we change out four times a year or as often as needed

Monuments

In 2015 we lobbied the local governments and then coordinated with the city and county to move the county’s war monuments off of the courthouse lawn and display them in a dedicated Veteran’s Park adjacent to the courthouse square. The Park consists of ten monuments dedicated to each war in U.S. History with the names of local servicemen who were KIA inscribed thereon. We also sold pavers to anyone who wanted to honor a family member at the monument

Local Stuff

We are a Gold Level Sponsor and we provide food services, hunting dogs, and guide services for Wounded Warrior Retreat hunting; we also participate in their annual fundraising banquet. We collect toys for the Christmas At Home Program in conjunction with the local Kiwanis Club. We’ve provided judges for the North Tattnall Elementary School Art & Writing Contest. We are partnered with our local DAR for fundraising and float-making for parade participation. We’ve also sponsored Grilled Chicken Plate dinners for uniforms for the Middle School Track team and purchased helmets for the Middle School Football team. Along with our Auxiliary, we sponsor the local Middle School Chess Club.

Community Work

For the VFW Patriot’s Pen Program (Middle School) and Voice of Democracy (High School) competitions we coordinate with the respective school advisor, provide eligibility and rules literature, provide an impartial review board for a double-blind evaluation of each entry, present the winners with certificates and Visa Gift Cards and the participants with recognition certificates. For the Voice Of Democracy contestants we also provide recording services for their oral submission. We are currently working with the county to design an amphitheater that will be immediately adjacent to our Veteran’s Park. The amphitheater promises to be a community center and destination for showcasing local talent and hosting civic events.
